The Crondall ringers were concerned that some of their bells were very odd-struck and they wanted to make improvements. Some of the bells are fitted with ‘twiddle pins’ that allow the clappers to be set up to strike accurately. However, the canons had been retained on some of the historic bells, meaning it is not possible to fit twiddle pins to these. However, adjustable clapper staples are a recent innovation and these have been successfully fitted at Crondall, allowing odd-struckness to be virtually eliminated.
The attached report explains this interesting project.
