The Ringing World National Youth contest is now in its sixteenth year. This year it was held in Nottingham and 43 teams entered, with 325 youngsters taking part, and about the same number of adult supporters in tow. The Guild young ringers entered into the 6-bell advanced call change competition.

First stop was Nottingham city centre to ring at the two 12 bell towers, St Peters and St Mary’s. We then had a little spare time to catch a tram to Clifton where transport to the contest tower was provided. The team entered the tower to ring 120 call changes. The team rang very well (better than any of their practices) and were very pleased with themselves.

Next stop was Holy Trinity in Clifton, before a tram ride back to St Mary’s in the city centre for a  handbell session and a go on one of the mini-rings.

All the teams assembled in the church for the results. The whole of the nave was a sea of colour as all teams had coloured polo and tee shirts. It was quite a picture.

The results were announced and we were placed FIRST in the 6 bell advanced call changes category – a simply brilliant result. Faults are not given, but teams are given a score out of 10, and we achieved 8.5

Trophies, medals and certificates were all given out.

All of the band were from the Farnham District – four from Frensham and two from Aldershot.

Many congratulations for a fantastic result. Thanks to the adult supporters – Anthea Edwards, Clare Le Marie, Jon Hetherington and Stu Aitken for accompanying the team, and especially to Jon for driving the minibus.

Next year, we have a trophy to defend, and it is hoped to enter two teams. Oh, and by the way, The Guildford Guild will be hosting the event next year, so perhaps like York in the recent 12-bell competition, let’s hope for a little home advantage…
